Yes, L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara lifts and separates! However, you need patience to achieve this…
In my perpetual quest for awesome mascaras at affordable prices (see my previous experiences here and here), I decided to pick up L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara, recently launched in the US about a few months ago.
“What a nifty brush!”, I thought when I first spotted it on display at my Harmon Discount Store. “I’ve seen this before, but where?” After experiencing a Matrix-like moment in my brain, I exclaimed, “GIVENCHY’S PHENOMEN’EYES MASCARA!” I have never personally used Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes, although I have seen and held the product in my hands at Sephora. I know this mascara had garnered a lot of buzz because of the brush and the claims of pinpoint precision that “perfectly curls and separates lashes”. Seeing the resemblance between Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes mascara and L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara, this purchase was a no-brainer, especially considering the price ($28 vs. ~$10).
Color:
I purchased this L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara – Blackest Black , #975 and it is a true, deep black. Perfection!
Packaging and Brush:
L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara comes in a thin, long red tube. The wand is longer than your average mascara, and much longer when compared to Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Mascara. The brush is where the “innovation” comes from. L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara is the first drugstore mascara to feature a spherical brush. Its size allows for a more precise application of mascara, particularly on the inside lashes. The size and shape of the brush is great for fanning out your lashes on the outer corner of the eyes. The problem with this brush is that wiping off the excess mascara is almost impossible (can you see the amount of product on the wand and the brush?) – the shape and the bristles don’t allow for this operation.
Scent and Formulation:
This mascara has your average mascara smell; it is not an offensive or unbearable scent whatsoever. The formula is thick and quite creamy, and helps the eyelashes achieve great definition and length. The creaminess however, contributes to clumps if applied excessively.
Testing, testing, 1-2-3:
This mascara has been in my rotation for about a month – have I told you how much I love mascara? Overall, I this is an OK mascara worth trying, and it is a “maybe” repurchase.
What I like about this mascara: What I don’t like about this mascara:
Bottomline and Final Grade:
I am not a huge fan of this mascara, but it is a contender. If I do repurchase it, I would use it in conjunction with a volumizing mascara. I like the lenghtening effect that L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara gives, but I rather stick with L’oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara because I prefer volume. I also think that as far as lengthening goes, I would purchase CoverGirl Lash Blast Length over L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara because of the clumps. I give L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara a B.
Application Tips:
As I mentioned, this mascara tends to clump as soon as the second coat goes on. Cleaning off the excess on this brush is nearly impossible. The best way I have found to apply this mascara is slowly. You’re probably thinking, “Wow… What a breakthrough…”, but in all honesty it works. You have to take your time to pass the brush through your lashes. I take the wand and roll it, making the spherical brush roll through the lashes, from bottom to top. In that way, you hit the base with the most amount of formula and by the time you reach the tips of your eyelashes, there is less formula. I hope that makes sense!
